At RUF, Inc., we're firm believers in the practicality of alternative energy. Be it from the wind, sun, or water, Mother Nature provides plenty of energy for us - so long as we can intelligently collect, store, and use it.

Darrin Fink, founder of RUF, Inc., has designed, constructed, and lived with a domestic alternative energy system since 1995. The system powers his home during long rural-Wyoming winter blackouts - which can last for days. It consists of 16 x 85W photovoltaic panels, and a 1000W wind generator. The collected energy is stored in a 24V 3,700 pound bank of industrial deep-cycle fork-lift cells. Public tours of the home have been conducted by Darrin as part of an annual alternative energy fair which is held in Douglas, Wyoming.

RUF's AATREC campers also utilize photovoltaic panels for the production of electricity. This greatly extends the length of time the camper can remain silent with no engine running. With the intelligent use of electricity, AATREC vehicles can remain parked almost indefinitely without any external electrical input.

We know what works, and what doesn't. Unfortunately, we routinely encounter people with high expectations, yet no idea about system practicality. A couple small solar panels on the roof of a home won't do much for it! All systems, from the smallest to the largest, require proper planning and calculation if they are to function as desired.
