The AATREC-FG Cab & Chassis

Our first commercial model, AATREC-FG is built on the efficient and reliable 4x4 Mitsubishi-Fuso FG Class 4 chassis.   Power comes from a direct-injection intercooled turbo-diesel engine, mated to a five-speed manual transmission with two-speed part-time 4x4 transfer case.  Full chassis details can be downloaded as a .pdf document here: 2003/2004 FG Chassis Details

Subsequent AATREC- FG expedition campers use the redesigned 2005/2006 FG chassis  The '05/'06 model has a new cab style with increased interior volume, easier access, and more powerful common-rail engine with 347 lbs-ft of torque!   2005 FG Chassis Details

Mitsubishi-Fuso Truck of America (MFTA) imports and sells the only cab-forward 4x4 truck available in the United States, and they have provided RUF, Inc. with exceptional support and technical data throughout the development and construction of the AATREC-FG.  Click the MFTA logo below to visit their website for the complete model lineup.

Previously, RUF, Inc. worked extensively with the Mercedes Benz Unimog in numerous applications, including expedition vehicles.  While the Unimog is an awesome off-road machine, it is an esoteric vehicle which does not prove well suited to the North American highway system, with long distances between areas where the Unimog excels.  Just one simple calculation shows that AATREC-FG can travel for 7% to 15% of the tire cost ($/mile) of the Unimog.

The decision to use the FG platform for the first set of AATREC campers was quite simple.  The FG is four wheel drive, has a great reputation for reliability, is supported by an excellent dealer network, and offers a fantastic three year unlimited-mileage drivetrain warranty.  (See MFTA Website for warranty details.)

Why cab-forward?  This forward-control arrangement offers plenty when designing a motor home for extreme conditions!  Some benefits include:

Exceptional visibility from the cab
High CA (cab to axle) to OAL (overall length) ratio
Good attack and departure angles
Tight turning radius
Easy engine access, with a torsion-spring-balanced tilting cab (see below)
